Present grade

Currently demonstrated ability relative to professional standards.

Later

Future grade

Projected ability after maturation, development and experience.

OFP

Overall Future Potential

Projected future professional contribution. It reflects scouting judgment and is not an average of tool grades.

The 20–80 scale is the established professional scouting convention, equivalent to the traditional 2–8 scale. True Grade is MBSA Group's own evaluation and reporting framework and is not an official Major League Baseball (MLB) grading system.

Evaluation scope

Position players and pitchers

True Grade evaluates players across the traditional baseball tools, with present and future grades, physical projection and a stated role.

Position players

Five tools, by position

Hitting, power, running, fielding and throwing, evaluated against the standards of the player's position.

Pitchers

Arsenal and delivery

Pitching ability, present performance, physical characteristics and future projection.

Overall

Role and OFP

Projected role and Overall Future Potential, with strengths and limitations stated.

Projection

Beyond the box score.

Professional scouting evaluates tools and potential rather than relying only on current statistics. Statistics describe what happened. Tools, mechanics and physical traits help explain what may happen next.

True Grade gives a decision-maker an evidence-based view of what a player is and what he may become. It does not guarantee outcomes.
